Meta refuses to sign EU`s AI regulations
Meta has refused to sign the European Union's new rules for artificial intelligence systems, citing legal ambiguity and concerns that the rules could hinder innovation.
The European Commission introduced a set of voluntary guidelines targeting general-purpose AI systems such as chatbots and generative AI tools. These rules emphasize data transparency, safety measures, copyright respect, and content labeling.
However, Meta's Global Head of Public Affairs, Joel Kaplan, stated that these guidelines are “legally unclear” and impose an extra burden on developers, going beyond the EU’s upcoming AI Act, which is set to take effect in August 2025. He warned the rules could slow down AI innovation and startups in Europe.
EU stays firm on AI governance
The EU aims to create a more transparent, secure, and ethical AI ecosystem. While the guidelines are currently voluntary, they are likely to become legally binding in the near future.
Despite Meta's refusal, the EU remains committed to launching both the voluntary rules and the AI Act on August 2, 2025. Meta's move could signal larger disagreements ahead between tech giants and EU regulators.
