WhatsApp is about to introduce username reservations on Android.
WhatsApp to Introduce Username System Soon
Until now, WhatsApp required a phone number to register and identify users. It was the only way to create an account and connect with others.
However, this is about to change — WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature that will allow users to connect via usernames, something that has existed for years on platforms like Telegram and Signal.
In the latest WhatsApp beta version for Android, users can already reserve their preferred username before the full system officially launches.
This means you’ll be able to secure your desired username in advance, ensuring no one else takes it before you.
The goal of this move is to keep the new system fair — so early adopters won’t be able to claim all the popular usernames first.
When choosing your username, there are a few important rules to follow:
-
The username cannot start with “www.”
-
It must include at least one letter.
-
Only lowercase letters, numbers, periods (.), and underscores (_) are allowed.
This new feature will also enhance privacy. Many people don’t feel comfortable sharing their phone numbers with people they’ve just met.
With usernames, you’ll be able to connect and chat without revealing your number, giving users better control over their personal information.
WhatsApp hasn’t yet shared an official launch date for this update, but since the company is already testing and preparing the feature, it’s expected to roll out within the next few months.
